Take the photo

Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

About the Ethiopia e-visa photo maker tool

An Ethiopia e-visa photo must be 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm). We could not confirm an official head size; this tool uses 1–1⅜ in (25–35 mm), top of hair to chin (50%–69% of the height). This tool measures your face and builds the crop to hit the middle of that range, then saves a 600×600 pixel JPEG at 300 DPI, which prints at exactly the right size.

Background: Plain white. If yours isn’t, choose a background color and only the area behind you is replaced; your face and hair are not edited.

For printing, download the 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) print sheet with as many copies as fit, print it at a photo shop or at home at 100% size, and cut along the edges. All processing happens in your browser; your photo is never uploaded.

    Frequently asked questions

What size is an Ethiopia e-visa photo?

2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm). In pixels at 300 DPI that is 600×600. We could not confirm an official head size; this tool uses 1–1⅜ in (25–35 mm), top of hair to chin (50%–69% of the height).

Where do these Ethiopian e-Visa photo rules come from?

From the official e-Visa portal, evisa.gov.et: its photo tips ask for a 2 × 2 in color photo taken in the last six months on a white background, with no selfies, filters or retouching, and its upload notes require JPEG, JPG or PNG under 2 MB. The portal does not give a head size, so the tool uses the usual range for 2 × 2 in photos.

Do I need a photo for an Ethiopian passport or Fayda ID?

Not if you apply in Ethiopia. The ePassport process at immigration.gov.et is: apply online, verification on your appointment date, then a branch visit for biometrics, where your photo is taken. Fayda registration also collects the face photo with fingerprints and iris at the registration center. Embassies abroad set their own rules: the Embassy in Washington, D.C. asks for a passport-sized photo under 2.5 MB for online renewal but does not state a size, so check with your embassy.

What about the Ethiopian Origin ID (yellow card)?

The Immigration and Citizenship Service asks for “one recent passport-sized photograph” but does not publish its dimensions, and embassies’ instructions differ. We have not added it as a separate size because we could not confirm one officially; ask the office or embassy you apply through.

How is the head size measured?

It is measured from the top of your hair to your chin. The tool estimates these points from your face and shows them as lines on the preview, so you can adjust the zoom if needed.

    Can I wear glasses?

Not mentioned on the e-Visa portal. When in doubt, remove them: glare and frames over the eyes are a common reason photos are rejected.

How do I print my photo at the right size?

Download the print sheet (4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) print) and print it at 100% scale (“actual size”, not “fit to page”) on photo paper, or order a standard 4×6 print at a photo shop. Then cut out the photos.
